Adult language services, assessments, and interventions

Services focused on your goals and priorities in an environment that you feel comfortable in.

Adult language services may be beneficial for you.

Adult language services can be beneficial for individuals facing speech difficulties caused by conditions like:

Aphasia: A language disorder resulting from damage to the brain's language centers. It may occur after a stroke and may impact your ability to communicate your thoughts easily, or you may experience difficulty understanding language, reading, or writing.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: Sometimes referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS is a nervous system disease that impacts nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Individuals with ALS will experience many changes to their voice and speech during their disease course and may need to use augmentative and alternative communication.

Parkinson’s Disease: A neurological condition impacting body movements resulting in tremors or difficulty with coordination. Often individuals will experience difficulty with vocal loudness and quality, impacting the effectiveness of their communication.

Multiple Sclerosis: A chronic disease that affects the central nervous system, disrupting the flow of information between the brain and the body. It can lead to various symptoms, including speech and swallowing difficulties.

Dementia: Dementia is a progressive condition that impacts memory, cognitive abilities, and daily functioning. Speech and language services play a crucial role in supporting individuals with dementia, addressing communication challenges and enhancing overall well-being.

  • Assessments can take place in your own home, via telehealth or at one of our satellite locations. During our assessment, we will meet with you and an important family member of your choice. We will discuss any of your concerns and your goals for speech-language services. During the session, you can expect us to ask you questions about your current communication strategies and medical and family history. Additionally, we will use a variety of tasks to examine your ability to understand and use language in daily life. Typically an assessment will last one to two hours.

  • Intervention plans will be tailored to an individual's unique goals and needs. Intervention plans may focus on the following areas:

    • Speech production

    • Language understanding/comprehension

    • Language use/expression

    • Reading
